Waikato and King Country

The Waikato, New Zealand’s longest river, has always been heavily exploited both commercially and recreationally. With countless tidal channels and islands dotting its length, it is a haven for whitebaiters and hundreds of makeshift shacks can be found sprinkled along many kilometres of the river. There are two main areas for baiting on the river and each area has its own style of baiting: upriver the baiting is done from stands, whereas at the river mouth and the dunes the preferred method is scooping. The river itself also acts as a hotbed of commerce as whitebait is often sold to buyers as they pass by in boats.
